When might I need vein treatment?

Spider veins

Spider veins are tiny broken blood vessels most common on the face, though they can appear anywhere on your body too. Typically red in color, spider veins look similar to delicate spider webs and do not bulge outward from the skin’s surface. 

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are generally larger than spider veins and may bulge as they grow larger. Varicose veins form when the valves within blood vessels become faulty and can’t push blood upward toward the heart as well as they used to. 

As a result of the faulty valves, blood pools in these vessels and causes them to twist and expand. Varicose veins are most common on the legs.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an injectable treatment for veins in your legs. During the procedure, your dermatologist injects the targeted vein with a substance called a sclerosant. The sclerosant irritates the walls of the vein which causes the whole vein to collapse. You might need a series of treatments to make the vein disappear entirely. 

Vascular laser therapy

Vascular laser therapy uses a laser to heat veins that are too small for sclerotherapy. Each pass of the laser feels like a hot rubber band snapping against your skin. The heat irritates and closes the blood vessel. You might need a series of vascular laser treatments to make a targeted vein disappear. 

What should I expect after vein treatment? 

After sclerotherapy, the Vivida Dermatology team applies bandages and compression stockings to help blood flow upward through your legs. The treated vein gradually disappears over days or weeks. 

Vascular laser therapy requires minimal downtime, and you can resume your normal routine right away. You can expect the treated vein to disappear gradually over the next few weeks.
