New or Changing Growths

What should you do if you notice a new or changing growth on your skin? First things first, do not panic. Not all changing spots on your body are bad. It is normal for us to get new moles or growths as we age. You should be on the lookout for anything that bleeds, seems to be continuously growing bigger, or will not heal. If you have something you think is normal like a pimple, bug bite, ingrown hair, etc… follow the 1 month rule. If the area in question does not heal within 1 month, you should be seen by your dermatologist.

Another thing to look for is the “ugly duckling.” Many of us have freckles and moles or other dark spots on our body. How do we know if it is normal, or something our dermatologist should look at? How does this spot compare to the others? If it stands out as the “ugly duckling” of the bunch, it is important to have that evaluated by a dermatologist. Remember that it’s not your job to know which spots are good or bad, that’s your dermatologist’s job. We’re part of your team , working together to keep you and your skin healthy.
